How much is a 100 gram 925 silver chain worth?
Silver is not really a “precious” metal like gold or platinum or palladium. Linking it to those is just traditional.
What’s more it has in recent years become less & less valuable compared to gold. In fact the gold-silver ratio is now at 120 or so, a level never seen in the old days. It seems that gold is retaining its great & historical popularity while silver is lagging.
In addition silver tarnishes in modern air & one keeps on having to clean it. I find that a bore!
Hardly worth going to all the trouble finding a purchaser for $40 or so. I’d keep it – as a nice present to wife, daughter, sister getting married…
Sterling silver that is .925 is almost pure, it is .075% short of being solid silver. You can easily tell if an item is sterling silver as it will be stamped .925. On a ring it is stamped on the inside of the setting. Pendants and earrings usually are stamped somewhere on the back although sometimes earrings can have a stamp on the post. Sterling silver bracelets should have the .925 silver mark towards or on the clasp. Chains should have the .925 silver stamp around the clasp or on a piece of metal attached to the clasp.
Most sterling silver these days is Rhodium plated so as not to tarnish, it also may be dipped in all colors of gold or platinum as well. The sterling silver of yesterday did not have a protective coating on it. You could tell immediately it was silver. If you looked at it wrong it would tarnish and was a pain to clean.
