He successfully identified these sparkling crystals as a new mineral, “silicon carbide” with the chemical composition SiC (diamonds are also made from carbon).
Imidlertid, moissanite crystals are almost impossible to find in nature. Scientists worked for a century to find a way to recreate these extremely rare, brilliant silicon carbide crystals. I 1995, Charles & Colvard was founded to cut, pusse, and bring to market the first and finest created moissanites.
Moissanite displays 10% more brilliance than diamonds and has nearly 2.4 times the “fire” (aka sparkle) as diamonds. Its hardness (motstand mot riper) and toughness (resistance to breaking) are exceptional. On the Mohs scale of hardness, moissanite is rated at 9.25, which means it is harder than all other gemstones, such as sapphire or ruby, except diamond (diamonds are the hardest known mineral, scoring a 10 on the scale).
