Pearls are considered a very feminine jewel, and I can’t think of anything prettier than a pearl stud for daytime it brings a touch of light to the face. It goes with everything, doesn’t get in the way of a collar or hoodie.

For night diamonds are nice, so are other stones with sparkle. At one time sparkling stones weren’t considered proper for daytime other than engagement and wedding rings.

What happens if I can’t take out my earrings?

If your earring is stuck, that’s usually not a problem. Just make a cup of boiled water and mix in lots of salt, then wait for it to get to a comfortable temperature and soak a cotton ball in the solution. Hold the soaked cotton over the hole (both sides, use two balls if you need to) and just keep it there for five minutes or so. Then you should be able to gently turn the earring post in the hole and ease it out of the hole. Clean up the hole afterwards with another cotton ball with salt solution.

If it bleeds or weeps a little, I recommend putting in a pair of very simple gold or hypoallergenic studs immediately after rather than leaving the hole open. There is a chance it will heal over if you leave it open while it is a little raw. Spin the earring every hour or so to prevent it getting stuck again. You can leave the hole open again after a couple of days.

If it bleeds a lot (like more than just a spot on a tissue), hurts a LOT, exudes pus or is swollen, it might be infected. Go to the doctor.

How willing are people to buy homemade earrings online?

Very!

The real problem is, how do you make sure that the people who are willing to buy handmade earrings online are finding your earrings before they buy other people’s handmade earrings? This is a big issue with channels like Etsy where there are literally tens of thousands of people selling handmade jewellery, from the most minimalistic and modern to the most twee and quirky. To be certain that you’ll sell a decent amount of your stuff on Etsy, it needs to be stuff which is really unique, so that it comes up relatively early in someone’s search results. For example, a search for ‘salamander earrings’ will have much fewer results than a search for ‘cupcake earrings’, which will (believe me) have thousands, of which the top ranking results will be top sellers. Customers aren’t going to sift through more than 4 or 5 pages of results before they choose something or give up.

Smaller handmade sales portals are therefore a safer bet because there is less competition. Even better is if you can find an online gift shop or fashion boutique who are willing to sell your jewellery on their site. Their websites will have a curated, smallish catalogue of products, so your jewellery will be more like a lollipop in a jar of candy rather than a drop in an ocean. You may have to pay those people a commission for each sale, though.

Generally, I find that it’s more profitable and effective to sell your jewellery in person at craft fairs, flea markets etc. Jewellery is very much an impulsive and indulgent purchase, and if your product catches someone’s eye they are likely to buy it; and it’s more likely to catch someone’s eye if they can see it ‘in person’ rather than as a tiny JPEG thumbnail on a website.
