Brookite can be distinguished from diamonds based on its density and refractive index, and it is distinguished from these gems by its unique plate-like crystal morphology and density less than rutile and greater than anatase.

Both anatase and brookite are produced as accessory minerals in magmatic rocks and metamorphic rocks, as well as in hydrothermal veins and placers.
