Rhodochrosite is a kind of manganese carbonate mineral and belongs to the trigonal crystal system. The crystals are rhombohedrons and are often produced as aggregates. They are granular blocks, milky, stalactites, nodules, and nodules with concentric layered patterns inside. It has glass luster to pearl luster, transparent to translucent, hardness 3.5-4.5. The color of rhodochrosite is mostly rose red, which is the typical color of the mineral. There are also pink, dark red, light yellow, light gray and brown colors. Its pink color is caused by manganese, and it becomes lighter with the increase of calcium content, but the surface is easy to oxidize and turns into brownish black. At the same time, the dark red variant has weak dichroism. Rhodochrosite has no characteristic color inclusions and no fluorescence effect. It is refractory and will foam when exposed to hydrochloric acid.
Rhodochrosite is low in hardness, brittle, poor in toughness, and difficult to process. However, because of its beautiful crystals, it is still used as a gemstone. High-quality transparent to translucent rose-red rhodochrosite crystals can be polished and processed into faceted gems, while pink opaque blocks can be made into cambered gems, but both are rare and mainly used for collection.
