Therefore, the chance of finding rubies in pegmatite is extremely small, while it is possible to find sapphires.
In basalt, there is free growth space and the possibility of Fe and Ti ions entering the crystal lattice, so high-quality large-grain sapphires can be found under this condition, and occasionally a small amount of rubies can be found.
In contact metamorphic rocks and dolomite, the content of Cr is higher than that of Fe and Ti, and the probability of ruby production is much greater than that of sapphire. But in this case, the crystal growth space is much smaller than in pegmatite and magmatic rock, so large-grain rubies are very rare.
In regional metamorphic rocks, crystals grow through the edge gaps of solid particles, so they often contain a large number of solid inclusions. Of course, the transparency of rubies or sapphires produced in them will be greatly affected.
From the simple analysis above, it can be seen that compared with sapphire, various growth environments are more difficult to meet the growth conditions of ruby. Either the growth space is not enough, or the source of pigment ions is insufficient, which makes it possible to find pure, large-grained, transparent rubies. The opportunity to find this is very rare, so high-quality rubies become very rare and precious.
