Artificial gemstones are relative to natural gemstones. They are produced and developed to alleviate the contradiction between supply and demand of natural gemstones. They are artificial gemstones rather than natural gemstones.

The national standard GB/T 16552 “Names of Jewelry and Jade” stipulates that: wholly or partly produced or manufactured artificially, used as materials for jewelry and decorations, collectively referred to as artificial gems. Artificial gems include four categories: synthetic gems, artificial gems, combined gems and remanufactured gems.

(1) Synthetic gems

A crystalline or amorphous body that is wholly or partly manufactured artificially and has a known counterpart in nature. Its physical properties, chemical composition and crystal structure are basically the same as the corresponding natural jewels.
