Most nostril piercings these days are 18 ゲージ. Hoops are available in that gauge. Anything smaller runs the risk of tearing. We call this the “cheese slicing effect”. 20 gauge is made and is available, but piercer opinions vary greatly concerning this size. These opinions are based on personal experience of problematic piercings that have returned. There is no definitive “right way”または “wrong way”.
Outside of hoops and nostril screws (nose bones I detest with a passion), there are now a few options that weren’t widely available until the last few years.
Small push-pin style flat back posts are definitely the most popular at the shop I work at. Threaded flat back posts work as well. This jewelry is made small and most people find it to be the most comfortable. Not to mention the tops can be swapped out without needing to take out the entire piece of jewelry.
Neometal, Anatometal, and Industrial Strength are three major brands with offer multiple nostril jewelry options. If the shop you go to doesn’t carry flat back nostril posts, then try another shop. A trained piercer should help get you sized properly for one so the jewelry won’t be too short or too long. An improper jewelry fit can cause problems with the piercing.
