Iolite, whose English name is Iolite, comes from the Greek word, meaning “violet”, indicating the gem-level color characteristics. It also has several English names, one of which is Cordierite, named after the French geologist who first described the mineral in the 19th century, Pierre Louis Dental Die (PLCordier); the second, Dichroite, also from In Greek, it means “two-color”, because this mineral has a very obvious “dichroic”, so it is also called “two-color stone”. Selain itu, because it is very similar to the indigo blue sapphire produced in Burma, and it often contains water, it also enjoys the reputation of “water sapphire”.

Cordierite is a silicate mineral with aluminum. It belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system. The crystals are short columnar, and pseudo-hexagonal columnar penetrating triple crystals are common. The crystals may contain mica, sillimanite, staurolite, and spinel. Inclusions such as stone, zircon, apatite, dll., the aggregates are massive or granular. It has glass luster, transparan menjadi tembus cahaya, and hardness is 7.0-7.5. The color of cordierite is blue and purple-blue, and there are also yellow, light yellow, light green, or light brown, with colorless streaks. One of its outstanding features is its strong pleochroism. The pleochroism of purple crystals is light purple, dark purple and yellow to brown; while the pleochroism of blue crystals is colorless to yellow and blue to gray. And dark purple, so when you observe it with the naked eye from different directions, you will find its body: the change is large, one direction is indigo blue, the other direction may appear very light yellow or colorless. Those with starlight and cat-eye effects are rare in cordierite.

Cordierite not only has an attractive color, but also has good toughness, so it is used as a gem. Translucent blue and purple cordierite can be polished into a curved interface, while transparent ones can be processed into faceted gems. Blue cordierite is cut and shaped like sapphire, but because the hardness, specific gravity and refractive index of blue cordierite are not as good as sapphire, and cordierite has strong pleochroism, it is not difficult to distinguish the two. Although gem-grade cordierite treasures are rare, they have been discovered. In the British Museum of Natural History in London, England, there is an egg-round treasure-shaped cordierite. It weighs 885 karat; a blue cordierite weighing 15.6 carats and an indigo cordierite weighing 10.2 carats are also hidden in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, Amerika Serikat, both produced in Sri Lanka.

Cordierite is a typical metamorphic mineral. It is mostly found in gneiss, crystalline schist and contact metamorphic rocks. It is often symbiosis with hornblende minerals such as biotite, sillimanite, and basic plagioclase. Placer is the main source of gem-grade cordierite, the main producing areas are Sri Lanka, Brazil, India, Myanmar, Madagaskar, Finland and Norway.
