Sodalite is a chlorine-containing sodium aluminosilicate mineral, sometimes containing potassium in its composition. It belongs to the sodalite group in mineralogy. The blue transparent sodalite crystals can be processed into faceted gems, and the blue compact blocks can be made into curved gems or beaded. Large blocks can be used as raw materials for jade carving. Sodalite is the main component of lapis lazuli. It can usually be used to replace lapis lazuli. The two have similar appearances and are easy to be confused. Namun, sodalite rarely contains characteristic pyrite inclusions like lapis lazuli. Selain itu, it can be distinguished from lapis lazuli and other blue transparent gemstones based on its hardness, specific gravity, refractive index, and fluorescence phenomenon.

Sodalite is formed in igneous rocks and is the crystallization product of sodium-rich magma, often associated with minerals such as feldspar, zircon, leucite, and nepheline. The main producing areas are the United States, Canada, and Namibia. These countries have high-quality blue dark blue sodalite or blue transparent and translucent sodalite blocks. Other producing countries include Russia, Italia, Norway, Jerman, India, Brazil and Bolivia.
