Both anatase and brookite belong to the oxide minerals of titanium, which are two homogenous and polymorphic variants of rutile minerals. Anatase is a very rare mineral. Its composition often contains impurities such as ferric oxide and tantalum, niobium, tin, and manganese. It belongs to the tetragonal crystal system. Transparent to opaque, hardness is 5.5-6.0. Its colors are black, brun rougeâtre, brun, deep indigo, green and blue, with strong pleochroism, brun, yellowish brown and greenish blue, and have strong dispersion. The composition of brookite also often contains iron trioxide, which belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system. The crystals are plate-like or columnar. The crystals have stripes in the longitudinal direction, with diamond luster to semi-metal luster, transparent à opaque. The hardness is also 5.5-6.0. Its color ranges from brown, yellowish brown, reddish brown to black, and blue, but it is rare. The pleochroism is also obvious, with yellowish brown, reddish brown and orange to golden brown. Brookite is divided into multiple varieties by color.
The dispersion of anatase is higher than that of diamond. The brown transparent crystals can be polished and processed into faceted gems, and their colorfulness can even exceed that of diamonds, but the particles are small and generally rare. The difference between anatase and diamond is that it has high density and low hardness, and it can be distinguished from similar rutile by its low refractive index and low specific gravity. Brookite is most precious with pure red transparent crystals. Gem-grade transparent crystals can be polished into faceted gems. Because of high dispersion, yellow transparent crystals can be used as substitutes for yellow diamonds, but they are extremely rare and are mainly used for collection. Brookite can be distinguished from diamonds based on its density and refractive index, and it is distinguished from these gems by its unique plate-like crystal morphology and density less than rutile and greater than anatase.
Both anatase and brookite are produced as accessory minerals in magmatic rocks and metamorphic rocks, as well as in hydrothermal veins and placers. The world’s main sources of anatase and brookite are the United States, Brésil, Grande-Bretagne, France, Switzerland and Russia. Taïwan, China also produces gem-grade anatase.
