The English name of turquoise is “Tur-quoise”, which comes from French and means “turquoise”. At present, people in Taiwan still call turquoise “turquoise” or “turquoise jade.” In fact, Turkey does not produce turquoise, but because the turquoise produced in ancient Persia had to pass through Turkey to enter Europe. When Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty entered Tibet, she brought a lot of turquoise. Turquoise is a water-containing copper aluminum phosphate, and the water content is generally 15% to 20%. Turquoise belongs to the triclinic crystal system, with a cryptocrystalline structure, which can have oolitic, kidney-shaped, tuberculous, vein-shaped and dense massive structures. In turquoise, there can be symbiotic minerals such as kaolinite, quartz, mica, and limonite. The color of turquoise is mainly blue and green, and it can also have variegated colors such as yellow, ocher and off-white, often with white spots and brown black iron wire. The sky blue is caused by the bivalent copper ion, and the green is closely related to the ferric ion. Aluminum ions in turquoise can be partially replaced by iron ions. As the content of iron ions increases, the color of turquoise changes from sky blue to green or earthy yellow.
Turquoise has a shell-like fracture, waxy luster or grease luster. The refractive index is usually 1.61～1.65, the density is 2.40 g/cm3-2.90 g/cm3, generally 2.76 g/cm3, and the Mohs hardness is 5-6. With the difference of its density and porosity, the density and Mohs hardness of turquoise tend to vary within a relatively large range. For example, the Mohs hardness of porous turquoise can sometimes drop to 2.40.
Turquoise can be worn alone or inlaid with other colored gemstones or precious metals into jewelry.
