At the end of the 19th century, scientists have successfully produced artificial emeralds using the flux method. They put the raw material of beryl, adding a small amount of coloring agent chromium oxide and flux (such as lithium molybdate and lithium barium oxide), osv., into a large crucible made of platinum, heated to 800°C, smelted for 7 dage, and then cooled In 14 dage, small artificial emerald crystals were finally obtained.
Because the cost and economic benefits of the flame melting method are very ideal, it is most suitable for the production of artificial spinel, ruby and sapphire, so people have tried to use this method to produce emeralds. Imidlertid, after a century of research, people still fail to realize the ideal of mass production of emeralds by flame melting method. Nowadays, the only mature production methods are flux method and hydrothermal method.
It is not easy to distinguish between natural emeralds and synthetic emeralds, because there is no simple and accurate method.
Først, an infrared absorption spectroscopy method is introduced. Its accuracy is extremely high. Unfortunately, the precision instruments required for identification are also extremely expensive and must be operated by experts. The study found that the use of infrared absorption spectroscopy to distinguish natural emeralds from synthetic emeralds is very fast and effective. The principle is as follows: natural emeralds have more water content than synthetic emeralds produced by hydrothermal or fluxing methods, and the infrared spectrum curve has 3 obvious absorption peaks near the wavelength of 20 nanometers; and the flux method The produced synthetic emeralds have no absorption peak because the infrared absorption curve tends to be horizontal because there is no water in the crystal.
For jewellers who do not have infrared absorption spectroscopy equipment, they can only use the other optical and physical characteristics of the two to identify them.
The Raman spectrometer can be used to distinguish emeralds filled with resin. The fissures of some emeralds are mostly filled by resin, and the filling effect is difficult to detect with the naked eye. At the Gemological Institute of Switzerland, a Raman Spectroscopy was specially designed to identify emeralds filled with resin.
