The color-causing elements in gems have specific absorption spectra. Therefore, according to the number, position and width of the absorption lines or bands in the absorption spectra, the elements that cause the absorption spectra can be determined, and then the types of gems can be determined. The same color-causing ion may produce different absorption spectra in different gems, so absorption spectra are often used to distinguish different gems of the same color.
The main color-causing elements in gems mainly include chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), cobalt (CO) and so on.
