“Eight three jade” is a new jade species discovered for the first time in a mine in Myanmar in 1983. It was originally called “climbing jade”, “Bashan jade”, “eight three huaqing” or “eight three kinds”. At present, it is known as the “eight-three jade” in the gem and jade circle of our country.
The main component mineral of “Basan Jade” is jadeite, with a content of more than 70%, in addition to a certain amount of albite, and a small amount of pyroxene group minerals and amphibole group minerals. “Basan Jade” has a medium-grained or coarse-grained structure, the internal cleavage of the jadeite mineral is developed, and the cracks between the crystal grains are obvious. The color is white with lavender, light green or blue-gray patches. Its density, hardness, refractive index and other properties are basically in line with the characteristics of jadeite, but because it contains albite and micro-cracks, the density and hardness are slightly lower than that of jadeite.
The original stone of “Basanyu” has poor transparency, mostly opaque to translucent, but because of its granular structure and many cracks, it is often treated as B jade. The appearance of the treated “eight three jade” has been greatly improved, and the transparency has been greatly improved, ranging from translucent to transparent.
