The apparently simplistic poem is actually a celebration of womanhood. You need to be a woman to understand the significance of bangles and jewellery in the life of a woman. You should just see a group of women buying bangles in a shop. Bangles… those beautiful and colourful things. Just the pictures of them and the sound brings forward womanhood.
Naidu uses the significance of bangles for women at different stages of life. For maidens, whose life is colourful, the colours and the beauty of bangles really represent the womanhood. For the bright and shining bride, the hue and the sunlit colour of bangles represent womanhood. For a middle aged woman, purple and grey colours represent the maturity and symbolize her womanhood.
