Those with starlight and cat-eye effects are rare in cordierite.

Cordierite not only has an attractive color, but also has good toughness, so it is used as a gem. Translucent blue and purple cordierite can be polished into a curved interface, while transparent ones can be processed into faceted gems. Blue cordierite is cut and shaped like sapphire, but because the hardness, specific gravity and refractive index of blue cordierite are not as good as sapphire, and cordierite has strong pleochroism, it is not difficult to distinguish the two. Although gem-grade cordierite treasures are rare, they have been discovered. In the British Museum of Natural History in London, England, there is an egg-round treasure-shaped cordierite.
