What are 925 Sterling silver plated earrings?
Silver or gold plating is a process using electricity that places a microns-thin layer of silver or gold over a base metal.
It will flake off with wear exposing the base metal underneath, usually nickel, brons, copper or a similar alloy.
Plating on earrings isn’t usually a big deal because they don’t come into much contact with the skin, like a necklace, ring or bracelet would. As long as the ear wires are a solid hypoallergenic metal you should be fine. So if earrings are silver plated but have sterling silver ear wires you’re pretty good to go and won’t notice much wear on the plating.
I don’t suggest buying earrings with silver plated ear wires though. The plating will wear off in a couple of weeks and leave you with a low quality metal exposed to your sensitive ear holes. If you have any metal allergies this can be a big problem.
