Second-degree firing is to put the originally colorless corundum into chemical raw materials containing color-causing elements, and then heat the color-causing elements at a high temperature to penetrate the surface of the gemstone, turning the colorless corundum into ruby or sapphire, but the color of the diffusion treatment only reaches The surface of the gem cannot go deep into the gem, only a shallow layer close to the surface of the gem, so the second-degree burnt gem cannot be re-cut or polished, otherwise it will lose its color after treatment.
To put it simply, diffusion treatment is a dyeing treatment method, in which the original color is subjected to a coloring heating process to make it color. Sapphire’s second-degree burn is heated by adding chemical powders containing iron and titanium color elements, while second-degree burnt rubies are added with chromium-containing chemical raw materials. Because of the larger volume of chromium, the surface of the ruby with diffusion treatment is less Flat, and diffusion-treated sapphire will have less surface unevenness, because iron and titanium are not as bulky as chromium.
In addition, the color of the diffusion treatment will be concentrated on the ridgeline of the facet of the gem. You can observe the surface of the red sapphire with a magnifying glass to detect it, or immerse the red sapphire in the specific gravity of diiodomethane to see the ridgeline of the second-degree burnt gem.
