Peridot is named for its unique olive green. Its chemical composition is magnesium iron silicate, which is the main component mineral of ultrabasic rocks. The orthorhombic crystal system has short or long columnar crystals, but it is often produced in granular form. Hardness 6.5-7; density 3.3～4.4g/cm3; glass luster to grease luster, often transparent.
Gemstones similar in appearance to olivine include yellow-green chrysoberyl, zircon, garnet, tourmaline, etc., which can be identified based on differences in crystal shape, color, hardness, density and crystal optical properties (mainly refractive index) .
The technological requirements for gem-grade olivine are: ①The color is dark green and bright, and yellow-green is the second; ②It requires less cracks, and the diameter (particle size) is at least 3mm, the larger the better; ③Because the crystals are generally transparent , So it is mainly processed into prismatic or emerald type, and not processed into curved surface (ie egg surface) or ring surface.
Sky Gem is also called “Heaven Gem”, which refers to peridot with gem-level conditions in meteorites. Sometimes it can be found in some meteorites, but it is very rare.
Our country has discovered gem-grade olivine in Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Fujian, Hainan, Yunnan, Xinjiang and other provinces (autonomous regions).
Hebei’s olivine is produced in the Wanquan area of Zhangjiakou area and is one of the important producing areas of gem-grade olivine in my country. The gem-grade olivine is forsterite, which occurs in alkaline olivine basalt in the Neogene. Its color is mainly yellow-green with varying shades, and a small amount is green; it is glassy to greasey, with good transparency and excellent quality. In 1979, a large olivine weighing about 130 ct was discovered and was named “North China Star”.
The Dashihe area of Jiaohe City, Jilin Province is also one of the important producing areas of gem-grade olivine in my country. The ore body occurs in the Late Tertiary alkaline basalt and belongs to forsterite. The particle size is 5-8mm, and the larger one can reach 20-50mm. It is yellow-green, grass-green and emerald green, transparent to translucent. The quality is better and the mineral content is also higher.
