Wulancui is a skarn containing chromium spinel. It is a new jade variety discovered in Wulan County in 1981 by the Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Qinghai Province. Because it contains emerald green chromium spinel spots, which can show different degrees of emerald green, it is named “Ulan Cui”. In the 1990s, in some places in Guangdong Province, it was possible that some people deliberately referred to Ulan Cui as a foreign jade in order to increase the value of the jade; it was also possible that some people lacked the knowledge of distinguishing jade and used it as an error to spread Ulan Cui. The mineral composition of Wulancui includes garnet, diopside, fushanite, chromium spinel, etc., which are grayish white, grayish green, dark green and emerald green. According to its color, decoration and texture, it can be divided into Bai Wulancui, Green Wulancui, Huawulancui and Huabaiwulancui. Green Ulan Cui with a light green background and thick green patches and white Ulan Cui with a white background and thick green spots are of higher value.
Ulan Cui has a hardness of 6-7, grease luster, slightly transparent to translucent. Because its structure is not dense enough, its processing and polishing performance is poor.
The high-quality Ulan Cui with thick dotted emerald mottling on the white ground can be used to process jade bracelets, jade buckles, chicken hearts and ring noodles and other light body jade; it can also process green cabbage, jade pendants and other small pendants. However, due to the poor polishing performance of Wulancui, even though the jade carving workers have been patiently polished, the surface of the jade still appears rough and uneven and the luster is not good, so it is always just a low-grade jade. Some vendors sold Ulan Cui jade bracelets as Burmese jade, and a small number of people were deceived, but most of the customers who are more familiar with jade can know that it is not jade when they touch Ulan Cui jade.
Ulan Cui’s top grade is emerald green and cute. It looks a lot like jade from a distance, so it is sometimes sold as jade by some unethical business operators. In fact, since the quality of Wulancui’s jade is far from being comparable to that of jade, the price of its premium products is only 1/5 to 1/10 of the price of mid-range jade, that is, the value of each bracelet is only 300 yuan.
